My favorite (and only) medical history podcast to listen to! Justin McElroy and his wife, the lovely Dr. Sydnee McElroy, take us through a different avenue of the worlds past medical atrocities. This loving pair (and sometimes their little girl Charlie) are not only educating, but entertaining. Justin keeps it light and Dr. Sydnee spreads the truth. It is obvious through this podcast that this couple loves each other. Each episode is about half an hour long and rarely, if ever, goes over an hour. But beware! You can and will lose track of time when listening. They even make their ad breaks interesting!
This podcast is largely family friendly and they will warn you if the topic may not be suitable. Of course they do talk about surgeries and various awful treatments of yore. There is a no cursing policy (which does not carry over to other McElroy podcasts by the way). Generally, their formula is as follows: disclaimer, into song, Justin feigning ignorance, intro to topic, origins, more information, ad break, old treatments, modern treatments and, a closer. This podcast has inspired me to go into a medical field as a medical examiner, and has given me plenty of interesting facts.
Halloween first came to be during Samhain, an ancient Harvest Festival held at the end of the Celtic year (well over 3,000 years ago). The festival marked the end of summer and the beginning of the winter time. It was believed the spirits of the dead returned on this night to damage crops and play tricks on the living. Romans went to the Celtic territories and were the first people to influence the celebration of Samhain. Christianity spread to the Celtic Territories and brought with it another holiday, “All Saints Day.” Pope Boniface IV, the designator of All Saints Day, was likely trying to replace Samhain with a similar but holier holiday meant to honor saints and martyrs. Later on, All Saints Day was renamed “All Hallows” and thus the day of Samhain (Oct. 31st) began to be called “All Hallows Eve,” and eventually shortened to “Hallowe’en.”
All of the holidays were melded together to create our modern version of Halloween, involving dressing up in one way or another. The celebrators of Samhain wore animal skins at their bonfire celebrations and those that observed: “All Saints Day” often dressed as saints or angels. Later on, men in Scotland would impersonate the dead on the day, explaining the ghoulish tradition we still observe. During the mid 1800’s, Irish and English immigrants flooded the United States and brought Halloween with them. From these immigrants we received the Halloween traditions we recognize today. Later, the immigrants who brought Halloween to America would develop their own version of trick-or-treating, but it didn’t become popular here until the 1930s.
On October 11, 2018 the world’s longest non - stop flight occurred. The plane took off in Singapore, Asia. The flight was about nineteen hours long, and it would fly more than 15,000km! There were 150 passengers and 17 crew member on the flight. For a passenger, this flight could be very stressful. This was the longest non - stop flight ever! Who wouldn’t be nervous?
Most people don’t like long flights, but some people do. Another inaugural flight was the flight from Perth to London. A man named Geoffrey Thomas is an expert in aviation and the editor-in-chief of airline rating site. He was on the flight from Perth to London and he was very excited to be a part of the process. For someone who isn’t an expert in air transportation, flying can be stressful, especially if it’s 19 hours long.
The flight went smoothly and everyone arrived safely. Singapore has finally won back the crown for the longest non - stop flight. Before this event took place, the flight from Auckland to Doha was the longest flight.
Halloween is just around the corner, and most people don’t know how to dress up. Here are several ideas whether you are going alone, or with a group.
SINGLE: Dress up as your favorite character from a favorite movie, tv show, or video game.
DOUBLE: be creative! Favorite characters, foods, etc.
GROUPS: These can get really creative, social media platforms, candies, etc.
After being released by Blizzard on May 16, 2016, the very well-known video game, Overwatch became a massive success. It gained an estimated 7 million players in in its first week of release. Overwatch received about 1 billion dollars in one year. Currently, about 40 million people are still playing. Overwatch is a 6v6, first-person shooter game. You can play with your friends or with other people all around the world. You can currently choose to play as one of the 28 different characters Overwatch has to offer, with more on the way. Players battle alongside their teammates against another team of six people. After each round, player’s XP (experience points) are increased, when you get a certain amount of XP you level up. Every time a player levels up they get a loot box. You can get different skins, voice lines, emotes, etc. for the characters from loot boxes. Blizzard, the developers of Overwatch, constantly put up new updates to keep Overwatch fresh and not feel old.
Every October, Overwatch has a Halloween Terror event. During this event new skins and voice lines are available. Players can get these skins and voice lines from Halloween themed loot boxes, which are achievable by beating the brand new, temporary game mode; Junkenstein’s Revenge. In this game mode, five players have to defend a door from Dr. Junkenstein, the evil version of the character Junkrat, and his minions. It takes about ten minutes to complete each match, and it is very hard to beat. Halloween Terror is not the only event that Overwatch celebrates. There are Christmas, Archive, and Lunar New Year events. Overwatch also celebrates the anniversary of its release, as well as a three week summer event. Blizzard keeps Overwatch interesting by changing up the events every year and they seem to never run out of ideas. Overwatch is a very enjoyable game, I recommend playing it.

Long Island is covered in spots wrapped in mystery and superstition while some of these places are just ordinary areas surrounded by tall tales there are a few that seem to be consistently strange and abnormal.
Arguably the most notorious example of these haunted locations is the abandoned Kings park psychiatric center. This place has more or less become an unofficial tourist attraction. The local police have mostly stopped restricting people from entering due to the daily amount of people looking to explore the grounds. This changes at night of course when the institution becomes a hotbed of drugs and alleged gang activity. However the complex is a husk of its former self since it closure in 1996. During the 1950s and 60s the complex was allegedly a center for experiments on the patients there. While the details on these experiments vary depending on who you ask it is widely agreed that the procedures were inhumane and the subjects now haunt the depths of the complex.
Pilgrim state psychiatric center is also shrouded in similar mystery but is often overlooked because of the more notorious Kings park. Unlike kings park a small portion of pilgrim state remains open and operational. There are not nearly as many disturbing stories about pilgrim state as there are of kings park there is one conspiracy that makes this location more than just an abandoned mental institution. This theory states that the facilities large tower that stands in the middle of a field was used for a much darker purpose than ever officially disclosed to the public. This conspiracy alleges that the reason the tall symmetrical open building was actually built to conduct satanic rituals sometimes involving patients.
Allow me to ask you one question quickly: What is the first thing that comes to your mind when someone mentions “gaming”? You would probably say “entertainment”, I presume, but that is not the case for everyone. A lot of people are into gaming because of its “trading” aspect that inevitably ships itself with every game. This could be seen by some as means for monetary or cosmetic gain. And at the same time, this can also be seen as an opportunity for deception and treachery. Not everyone is willing to pay up to their side of the trade, so they use various methods to trick people into horrible scams just for profit. In this article, I will tell you some methods of scamming in Fortnite, and also tell you how to avoid them.
First, here is what is being traded in Fortnite’s Save The World game mode. This game mode allows players to obtain schematics, which they can level up, modify, and make more powerful/valuable. Usually, these schematics allow for one to craft their own weapon to use against enemies, which can impact how the player performs, depending on the weapon. Although these schematics themselves aren’t tradeable, the weapons that they allow you to craft are. Because of this, players frequently trade with each other to get certain weapons that they want, even if they aren’t strong enough to properly wield them yet. These trades can be a simple as a typical barter, but some people only accept real life currency in return for those guns(hence why people make monetary gain of of these games). But trading weapons in general is a risky action.
First of all, in order to trade, two different players must be in a location in which they can physically interact with each other without worry of other players interfering with them. Next, they must honestly give details about their weapon(strength, durability, rarity, and weapon name). Then, they must each drop whatever weapons they want to trade in opposite corners of their location. Finally, both players must run to the other’s weapon and pick it up. Does this sound like a hassle to you? I can tell you from experience, it definitely is. Rarely, if ever, will you find another player who is legitimately trying to trade like that.
If someone were to try to scam, these are some of the ways they would do it. The first method involves the scammer lying about how good their weapon’s stats are. They will then ask you to trade your weapon for it, in which they get a good gun, but you could get a worse gun in return. Another way you can get scammed is when you drop your weapon, but they don’t drop their weapon. This allows the scammer to pick your weapon up and steal it before you can pick it back up.
Although it is hard to resist tempting trades, there are ways to avoid scamming all together. A safe way to trade is to trade specifically with people you are well acquainted with, such as friends. The biggest way to avoid scamming is to simply not trade at all. The developers never intended anyone to trade in the first place, since they want you to earn all of your items instead of being given them. Keeping this in mind, be careful when you trade, and who you trade with.
