Libby Villar Something I do that makes me happy is cooking and baking with my cousin. To me cooking and baking allows me experience new things and learning different ways to relieve stress. Cooking and baking is helpful to me because it allows me to do new things and different things. Baking and cooking help me relieve stress and is something that makes me happy and can make a lot of other people happy. While cooking I learn different types of food to cook and different ways to cook them. Cooking is a great way to learn different things and different types of food from around the world. You can use different ingredients for different things. You also learn different techniques to cooking. Like different ways to cut things or different ingredients you can add to something to make it taste better. Another thing that makes me happy is baking. Baking and cooking are very similar. You can use some of the same techniques. Baking is a good way to try different designs on a cake or any other baked good. Pumpkin Pie Ingredients:

Sports have always been a big part of my life. I grew up trying every sport I could even though I wasn’t very good, and I watched my sisters play soccer and volleyball for years. It wasn’t until I was a freshman that I found a place I actually felt welcomed. In the spring of Freshman year I decided to join the track team. I loved every second of it. I was not very good, and I haven’t gotten much better. I am a thrower and going to practice is the best part of my day. When I am at practice I actually feel comfortable and know I can show my real personality. When I am at school I am always really quiet. But when I am at track, I talk a lot and can show my teammates who I really am. I have never felt that close with any team, and I have been on a lot of them. Being on the team has helped me grow as a person and helped me make so many friends that I may not have gotten close to without joining. I am a senior this year and it is kind of surreal because next year I will be in college and not at track with everyone else. I am super upset that I won’t be on that team anymore but know that because of being with my friends from the team everyday all year that I will go to college and become the person I was always meant to become. I know this because they have given me the confidence that I have always needed to let my guard down. One of the throwers once told me that when I go to college I will just blossom into who I really am. I never told them how much that meant to me. Not only do I think I can become that person but I have become a lot more talkative outside of track as well. I hope that when I graduate the team will help other kids that aren’t very confident, grow as a person. I highly recommend being a part of the track team. If not a thrower, even the runners have a great time and become very close. These relationships have formed not only because of the people on the team but also because Coach Ungaro and Coach Burke has made it a place for everyone and makes someone who is really quiet feel just as important as everyone else. It is always nice to know that you have a second family behind you every step of the way. Computers are Very advanced now compared to how they were just years ago.
They took up rooms just to count the population by the government in 1880 and they were just used to count and punch cards. ` During the 1930s the calculator appeared with the ability to understand the digital concept of 0 during World War II. In 1951 the first computer made for the public was the UNIVAC made by Remington Rand, which cost over a million dollars per machine. Than the following year IBM introduced its mainframe computer. Then IBM made smaller, cheaper machines that were much more popular for business. Then in 1954 IBM developed Fortran one of the original computer programming languages that is based on mathematics. In the same decade the development of transistor, integrated circuits and microprogramming followed. During the early 1970s the new Microprocessors let computers be more powerful which that led to faster processing speed and more memory data storage and it was made by Texas Instruments and Intel. In the late 1970s Personal Computers were added to the market. In 1976 Apple sold Apple 1 and Apple 2 the year after. After that the industry started to develop with Microsoft and Apple. In 1984 ,Microsoft got huge when they sold their DOS operating system with IBM computers. Apple produced Macintosh, and that began the graphics and text that replaced systems that only showed text after that apple started calling their computer system “Mac” to have theirs different from the rest. In the 1990s the computers got far more popular and then they became a common household items. Then when Microsoft’s Windows 95 system came out it increased the mass use of computers in the growth of world wide web. That made every profession use software to increase its product and service. In the 2000s Microsoft introduced XP and Vista operating system and Apple had OS X series that had the average person had access to the tools. They became portable with the work of PDAs the Smartphones and Tablets. Apple changed the industry with the launch of the IPhone, So other companies like Samsung and Nokia made their own Phones. Though to some it might seem like a tedious and boring activity, I find fishing to be one of the most enjoyable activity there is. There's nothing quite like going fishing early in the morning as the sun has only just began to reach over the horizon. Whether it be the occasional fluke or bluefish under the Smith Point Bridge, or the dozens of walleye to be caught in the streams of Northern Canada, fishing always proves itself to be exciting and rewarding at its best, and relaxing at its absolute worst. It was my grandpa who first got me into fishing, as he would tell his many fishing tales he would tell me. I remember one in particular as he would, on several occasions, grow fish he caught that were too small to eat by themselves in a fish tank for several months. Only after his sons grew attached to the fish and considered it their pet would my grandpa be seen eating a sandwich, comprised of course of with the fish his sons had become so attached to. I will never forget about when I hooked into a northern pike during the summer of 11th grade, during my canoe trek in Canada. It had to have been upwards of 6 pounds; massive for a freshwater fish. Immediately after setting the hook with a steady upward motion, I heard the clicking of my reel as the fish rapidly pulled out line. The rod bent as I fought the fish, always being careful not to pull to hard and snapping the line. But every time the fish would get close to the shore, it would swim off yet again, dragging out many yards of line along with it. After what felt like an eternity, the fish had finally tired, and I quickly got a hold of it. Realising the immense size of the thing, I immediately took a picture to remind me of that battle Though some do not see the appeal, I personally find fishing to be relaxing and exciting almost at the same time, and a thoroughly enjoyable activity. Jillian Koenig Something I do that brings me happiness is volleyball. I’ve just recently started the sport but I’ve grown very fond and passionate about it. When you’re in the game you have to focus on the ball and the ball only. This allows me to drown out my thoughts and stress and just focus. I love the feeling of being part of a team and only having a common goal. Sometimes it’s stressful when I put too much pressure on myself to play well, or I have to make a tough dig, but even in those stressful moments, I’m still having fun and playing the best I can. When I get home the first thing I do is get changed, put on my knee pads, grab a ball and go outside to the “court” we bought for the backyard. I practice my serving, hitting, and passing with my dad. Then I do my homework. When I’m done with that I get ready to go to volleyball. I work my hardest at practice because every second playing counts. The next day I repeat and repeat, and repeat, and repeat. The monotony doesn’t bother me, though. I like the repetitiveness of practicing because it works the skills into my brain until I have it perfect every time. I’m nowhere near perfection today but tomorrow I’ll be one day closer, and someday I’ll get there. No matter how hard something is, if you love it, you’ll be willing to work at it, day after day until you lose track of how many days you’ve spent working on it. It’ll always be worth it. Max Davern Taking on new challenges on a daily basis is what I live for. Overcoming an obstacle and moving forward gives me the adrenaline I need to live my life, but I wasn’t always like this. When I was young the whole premise of change in any moment scared me. The thought of doing anything out of my daily routine seemed impossible for me, but that one fateful day came around when I choose to step out of my comfort zone and to take a leap of faith at a sleepaway camp at lake george. I Hiked for my first time ever on the hardest hiking trail they provided because I wanted to say that I accomplished it. After rattlesnakes overtaking my campsite, a major water shortage, and getting lost throughout the trails and hiking an extra 4 miles in a day, I exceeded my own limits(at least I thought I did). I realized that my limits are endless as long as I believe they are. I couldn't imagine myself hiking for a full day, let alone three days. This is the type of simple narrow mindset I had before this life changing trip. After that trip, although I never wanted to do that again, I did learn to take what comes my way with open arms. Whether It was cliff diving in Mexico, going to a writers conference in Vermont and stepping on stage for my first time in front of hundreds of people, or stepping on the court at a county final game for volleyball with packed stands, a thought of doubt never crossed my mind. Some people may even think this is a bad thing. Doubt can come in handy when You are willing to plan for failure. Although you should prepare for the worst, I am a big believer in the fact that if you believe that you have a chance at failing, it is more than likely that you will. That’s the risk in taking chances, but I’m willing to live my life with a few risks if that means I’m living it to the fullest. Taking chances may seem like a broad subject that can define someone, but the moment of deciding nothing is impossible and proving it, is what I live for. Joseph Salaway As Thanksgiving approaches, we look at what we are thankful for. One thing I, as well as a lot of people, are thankful for, is my dog. They earn the title “Man’s best friend” by bringing so much unconditional love and joy into our lives. When we come home, they are there at the door to greet us with their tails wagging. They know when we’re sad, when we’re stressed. They know how to make us feel better. They help get us off the couch by having us play with them. I love walking my dog on weekends when it is sunny. I love telling the story about the first time she went upstairs and was too scared to come down so my brother had to carry her. They are also as loyal as loyal comes. They guard us like we are one of them. They take the duty of being the first line of defense against anyone they don’t know. They warm us when we are cold and lie with us when we’re sick. I know when I go off to college I am going to miss my dog every day as I know she will be missing me. Julia Johnson When I think of happiness, the first thing to come to mind is music. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been in love with performing. I can even remember putting on little shows for my parents on my fireplace. All of my memories involve music, whether it be singing with my cousins and sister, or performing in my school’s choir, or performing in a community musical. Whatever it may be, my favorite memories always trace back with music. It could be that one song my friends and I couldn't get enough of that one summer, the time my cousins and I blasted an entire playlist on their speaker or the song from our favorite Disney movie. The song that my dad always plays in his car and the song my mother sang to me. A song holds a thousand meanings. However, performing live takes the cake. When I am on a stage everything feels right, like I’m supposed to be there in that exact moment. The adrenaline rush sweeps over me and I am completely lost in the melody. Music helps me get through anything. It’s a constant stress reliever and an escape from my most hectic days. Wherever I go I always know music will follow. . Megan Alden
This year was my 5th year playing field hockey, and I am proud to say that it has become my all-time favorite sport. I used to play field hockey just to get in shape after the long summer, but now I have really grown to love it. On the middle school field hockey team, I was a sub and barely played. The usual case was where the same girls would play the entire game. Even in 9th grade, I played a little more than I did on the middle school team, but I still was considered a sub. This year we had a new coach, Coach Lawrence. She saw potential in me, and saw me as a leader. She made me captain of the JV field hockey team, and I could not tell you how much of a honor that was, especially since I convinced myself that I suck at the sport since I have only been a sub my entire life. I played and started in every single game, why? Because I wanted a fresh start. When the season started in late August I told myself that I need to put the past behind, and to focus on “right here right now.” I pushed myself harder than I ever had. I put in 100% effort every single practice, and luckily it worked out in the end. I was told numerous times by coaches, and parents, that this is “my” sport. I played basketball and softball for the school in the winter and spring, but my mom even told me that this is the sport that I am the most talented at. I took her word, and no longer took field hockey as a sport to just get in shape at. I learned to love it thanks to my coach, or the first coach in this sport that believed in me. After almost every single game I would go up to her and ask her what I needed to work on, she would tell me, and sometimes she would not even have an answer telling me that I played great leaving me dissatisfied. One practice after I warmed up with the team and was about to go practice my drives to a fellow teammate, Caroline, and Coach Lawrence pulled me, and my teammates Carla and Kira aside. She congratulated us and told us that Coach Ivino wants us to practice with varsity. My heart skipped a beat. All my hard work payed off, and I have never been more happy and yet nervous at the same time. We practiced with them and it went well, then we went to the game with them just for the experience, and that alone was an honor. After they lost to a ridiculously close game to the best team in the league, I went back to practicing with JV. At our second to last game a girl hit the ball at my head, and I was diagnosed with a concussion. I could not play the last game, and Coach Ivino ended up pulling me up again since they made the playoffs. I sat on the sideline just for the experience alone since I could not play. My mom felt bad about all of this so she is putting me in a winter and summer league that I am really excited about. This chaotic mess to me was totally worth it though because in the end, I discovered my favorite sport. Aidan Somers In the spirit of our Thanksgiving newsletter this piece will be dedicated to a subject important to me: Reading. This year I have read new books never before seen by my eyes, and I have read old books special to me. Each novel was enlightening and influential in my life. The year started off with Catcher in the Rye. Undoubtedly a controversial novel, and to me it was awesome. I loved Holden Caulfield as the unreliable narrator and appreciated his vulnerability and emotional faults. I remember discussing the novel in English class and being the only one who enjoyed the book. Everyone viewed Holden with disdain, it might be considered an interesting dilemma. People love Holden because they recognize the same faults in themselves, others hate him because of the same reason. In my eyes it speaks to the average high schoolers in ways most books don’t, especially ones we read in class. Over the summer I attempted to maintain reading avidly but really only succeeded in re-reading the Game of Thrones series. The complex nature of the novels gives each reading a refreshing taste, with new details uncovered every page. No word is written without purpose and the series is a fantasy masterpiece. It combines the fantasy of books such as Lord of the Rings and gives a political atmosphere of feudal society, but at its core the strength lies in the empathy. I can sympathize with each character since George RR Martin has managed to build real people in a fictional world. The series is one of my favorites and I love every second that I read it. Next came the first novel we had to read for school, The Great Gatsby. The book proved to be another great piece we are required to read. While full of characters unlikable and privileged it gave interesting comments on the illusion of the American Dream and moral complexity of the twenties. I grew to appreciate characters such as Nick and Gatsby, just trying to find a place in the world and be general good people. While in comparison I formed a hatred for the character of Tom reflective of the indecent, aggressive humans we have to endure. Finally the last book I read was Perks of Being a Wallflower. As of now Stephen Chbosky’s tale of teenage suffering and romance is my favorite book. In my opinion the book should be read within school as every high schooler can connect with the characters. While depressing at times the novel maintains a feeling of hope that never falters. Reading is the epitome of my character and influences me everyday, and I highly recommend the novels mentioned. As George RR. Martin says, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads lives only one” Lacrosse does not only consist of a sport that longs to be played. It mainly consists of a team; a team consisting of teammates that become best friends, a team that you learn to rely on and support. Through the dedication and commitment to this sport, I’ve made longing friendships, memorable memories, and most importantly learned important lessons. Although lacrosse may only be a sport, it requires motivation, dedication, and mental strength. Anyone can play if they have the mindset to succeed. There are days when you want to give up; to not do that extra sprint or set in a workout that seems impossible. But when you proceed to push through the times where it seems impossible, you learn to overpass obstacles and become successful, in not only the sport, but in everyday life as well. Lacrosse is a mental game, if you know you are capable of doing something, you will obtain that goal. Through these hardships, strong and intelligent athletes come into play. These powerful individuals not only succeed on the field, they also succeed in life outside of the sidelines. Sports not only help shape an individual, they create intellectual and determined people. Through not only the sport, but mainly the team, athletes learn to adapt their sport life into their daily life. Being apart of Phantom Girls Lacrosse team over the past three years has been an amazing and honorable experience. Two years ago, in May of 2015, our team had an undefeated season. We walked into every practice determined to beat our rivals Mount Sinai and defeated them during the season through hours of motivation. Although we did not succeed our goal in versing them in the county finals, we are still known till this day as a powerful and amazing team. Without individual efforts from everyone on the team, we wouldn’t have had the undefeated season that we longed for. This team taught me that if you work hard enough, you can obtain any goal that you want to achieve. Although we lost in the end, we learned to never let another team get in our heads, to always have confidence, and to always remain as one team. Being on the Phantoms Lacrosse team has not only shaped me as an athlete, it has also shaped the person I am as a student and an individual. Without the sport of lacrosse, I wouldn’t have been as determined and motivated through my everyday life. This sport has become apart of my life and will continue with me until the end of my college career. I look forward to what this sport has waiting for me and how it will affect my future. Casey Curran My family and I get the opportunity to travel to different places each year. I get to experience new places. One of the reasons why I appreciate traveling is because it relaxes me. It takes me out of reality and there isn't a care in the world, well until the trip is over. The best time to go away is when you have off from school in the school year. I can forget about my schoolwork and just take time off to relax. I normally go on cruises to see more places during one trip. All of the countries I have visited are in the Caribbean. I have never been to Europe, but that is on my bucket list because unlike America there is lots of history in many European countries Depending on where I travel to it makes me realize how fortunate I am. For example I have traveled to the bahamas and Jamaica. Outside the cruise gates is poverty and crime. People on the streets begging for money, pickpockets, and police surrounding every gate entrance. Many people, like myself, are scared to go near these parts, but then I realize I am lucky enough that I never have to be in that situation. There are also some people who aren't fortunate to travel and experience new places. The school year can definitely drag on and seem like it will never end. When I have plans to go away it helps because I have something to look forward to during the school year. It makes weeks go by pretty fast because once february break is over, which is when I go away, it's already March. Once March is here that means it's closer to spring and warmer weather. No more snow days. Traveling helps people relax and get away from the stress of school or work. The workload can be a lot and very stressful. You also need a break from school and not having to worry about when your next project is due. Even when I travel to the same places it never gets old for me. When traveling to the Caribbean there are beautiful beaches or going to Europe and seeing historic landmarks. There is always something to do. Luca Gross
Ever since I was a child I’ve had a love affair with films. I’ve been watching movies for as long as I can remember. My dad loves movies, my brother loves movies, and I’ve grown to love movies as well. I love movies from all genres, my favorites however are Horror, Sci-fi, and some comedies. Throughout my life I’ve seen countless movies, probably enough to take longer than my age to watch. These are my top 5 movies, in no particular order because I can’t do that.
Movies are awesome, you can watch them for the fun of it, to be enveloped into a story, it’s a good time waster too. I have countless more favorite movies i could rattle off right now. But I won’t… Thanks for reading. Annie Buxton What is November? For most it's the start of crispy, Fall leaves leaving behind bare trees. It’s raking up the backyard with your dad, ordering Pumpkin Spice lattes at Starbucks, unpacking those comfy sweaters to wear in the breezy wind. But for me, it’s different. Although I appreciate Mother Nature finally taking a break from the blazing, summer heat during the November days, the chilly nights under bright lights, sitting along the sidelines of the football field is more my style. America's favorite sport revs back up with the start of Fall. Sunday Night football games premiering when the clock strikes eight. It’s the thrill of watching your team play on the field, rooting for touchdowns in the screaming crowds of fans. Although this season I haven’t been able to do much celebrating for my Giants, it’s that small chance of victory that forces me to tune in and watch till the very end. Not only the NFL, but college football as well. Tailgating at the West Virginia Mountaineers games, standing in the chilled air, swaying within the crowd of blue and yellow. Without football, November would be going to bed early Sunday nights. It would no longer mean taking road trips down to West Virginia for the game. I’d lose the game that bonds my family together. It wouldn’t be November. Max Davern

We have Fall, Winter, Spring and my favorite, Summer. Summer has to be the most wonderful time of the year in my opinion because I wake up feeling happy and go to sleep knowing that the next day will only be better. I love waking up early enough to see the first rays of sunlight shine through my window and illuminate the room with a gold glow. During the summer I can take my time getting out of bed and appreciate the morning more than on a cold dark school day. I make my way to my kitchen and make earl gray tea with avocado toast, and if I feel like it I’ll cut a pomegranate. By 9 am I like to have a set plan of what I’ll be doing that day, the option are endless. Depending on how my day went I’ll decide whether I want to go out to dinner or not. Every summer night is fueled by laughter and conversation and usually ends on a positive note. Then I go home, sleep and repeat the following day. I am beyond thankful for my life during summer time.
By Chris Bacalla My passion is Patches. I entered this world in need of a savory sweet. Not confined to its namesake, though. Sweet, too. A strong, but tamed dose of sour would surely win me over. Sour Patch Kids and I have quite the history. Whenever I eat one before 10 am, I am reminded of Easter mornings. Mornings on which I would protest to any candy but Patches. “Patches!” I’d shout. “Burn the rest, ye are unworthy!” How dare a mature candy such as Reese's find itself in my basket and expected to be treated as the Patches’ equals? Sour Sweet. MORE! Each Halloween, I expect a sea of yellow and green wrappers to pour from my pillowcase. I keep records of the neighbors’ givings over the years. I plan my route so that I may yield maximum Patches.
Recently, in a dream, which I know to be the truth of my childhood, somehow wiped from my memory, I learned that it is not the taste which fuels my desire for Sour Patches. I was an eight-year-old country rustic health nut. I sat on my uncle’s porch and ate apples as the cores piled in front of me. I crawled beneath the cows and drank the milk straight from the udders. From four a.m. to noon I picked Kale, bringing back six and a half baskets’ worth. Four were to be eaten my me. One day I headed back from the the Malley’s farm with four chickens strapped to my boot. They pecked at me and made their inferior noises. As I turned back to give them a lash or two, I noticed a wrapper stuck on one’s foot. The name was indecipherable, for my uncle raised me to speak German, soley. I brought it back to Mr. Malley and inquired of this foreign wrapper. Without a word, he brought me into his cellar. The octagonal room was ginormous, filled from wall to wall, ceiling to floor, with a rainbow of mason jars. He handed me an empty notebook and pen, blindfolded me and told me to lay on a yoga mat, facing up, mouth open. I was instructed to record the nature of the spiritual experience that awaited me. A Patch entered, and I saw Michael the archangel. He had come from the sixth circle of Hell. He had disgraced God. Upon seeing Peter he was told to admit his wrongdoing in not worshipping Patches. Eternal paradise was promised if one were to commit his or her life to Patches. Forget all else. I am a hawk now. I soar above the rest, enlightened-but hunting...hunting for Patches. Julia Aurandt With the help of a recipe I found online years ago, and a few adaptations of my own, I have mastered the art of a perfect apple pie.

Pie
First, prepare the pie crust. Combine flour, salt, and butter in a food processor. Pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs, about 10 1-second pulses.
Next, assemble the pie. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
To many, the idea of getting punched and kicked would not be defined as a good time but to me it’s my favorite thing to do. MMA fighting is a passion I’ve had for a while and it has been my main sport for almost 10 years. When you’ve had a bad day and need to relieves some stress this is a great way. Many perceive MMA as two people mindlessly beating the daylights out of each other but it is so much more than that. When you step into that ring you can forget everything that happened that day or that week and get all your frustrations out. Not only can it help you relieve stress but it also keeps you in great shape. Even if you train not to fight but to just keep in shape it’s an amazing workout and stress reliever. I know countless people that have both fought and not fought and we all share the same respect and love for the sport. Overall it’s a very misunderstood sport. The technique for each punch is different and the timing of each kick needs to be exact or you can get yourself knocked out. Understandably that does not sound enticing to many but to me it’s the thrill of it that keeps me coming back week after week. It is not a sport for everyone but for those with the determination to get themselves in shape or for anyone looking to lose some weight after the holidays, it can be something that can change your life. Meghan Clayton and Jess Rivera Although the first Thanksgiving is said to have taken place in 1621, its roots can be traced back to ancient times. Following the fall harvest, Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians were know to pay tribute and feast. In addition, Thanksgiving is similar to the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot as well as Native American traditions of celebrating the fall harvest with a feast. Symbols of Thanksgiving can be traced back to all across the world from several different time periods. Throughout time and from different places and traditions, symbols of Thanksgiving can be found across the country. But what are the origins of these symbols?
The Turkey Ironically, there is no factual evidence showing that turkey was actually eaten during the first Thanksgiving. Traditionally goose is eaten in England in honor of the harvest, however wild turkey was more available to the colonists who turned the harvest into a holiday. Turkey was a symbol of fertility and abundance to the Native Americans who started to celebrate Thanksgiving. The Cornucopia Seeing as Thanksgiving originated from Native American Harvest celebrations it’s no surprise that the Greek symbol for harvest is a part of our Thanksgiving symbolism. Originally the cornucopia was the horn of a goat given to Zeus, the lord of the skies, as a gift. Pilgrims and Native Americans Black hats with buckles and native American attire are commonly associated with Thanksgiving. This symbol traces back to the story of the first Thanksgiving in America, where the story tells of the native Americans and Pilgrims coming together, and it symbolizes family, friendship, and appreciation of one another. Pumpkin The pumpkin, like the turkey, was readily available to the natives and yet not proven to be eaten during the first Thanksgiving. It’s also an Autumn harvested plant, reinforcing its association with Thanksgiving. The pumpkin symbolises the sun that gives life and man’s personal power.
